hooray, finally something has happened that makes me feel slightly better about personal freedom and the general state of the uk - those fucking id cards are not going to be compulsory after all.

It's been looking that way for a while. It was obviously going to be an administrative nightmare, and the word was Gordon was never very keen on the idea, to the point of being very unwilling to find anyone any money for it.

What I worry about, though, is that the ID cards themselves may be moot - there's no word yet on the underlying database.

I don't know if we can call it a victory, considering how much money has been wasted on the project already.

Seriously, how could it cost the £10^9 they claim? What did they spend all that money on? And why, when it was patently obvious from the start that this was going to be a really unpopular idea.

Oh, and remember how when the Conservatives were in power and first brought the subject of ID cards up, Labour opposed it, and then when Labour were in power and tried to introduce ID cards the Conservatives opposed it.

I'll be glad when the idea is confirmed as dead, not just merely optional.
